Arbitrary-Definition understanding Help??

The point is to get together. Inviting someone "for coffee" is really just saying "I want to spend time with you" and has nothing to do with the coffee. It could just as easily be beers or lemonade or caramels or shopping or knitting. The thing you're doing is arbitrary - it doesn't matter what it is, just that it's an invitation to spend time together.
